FIGHT AGAINST FREE-RADICALS AND IMPROVE INSULIN SENSITIVITY

ALA OVERVIEW

ALA is a potent antioxidant, stimulates glutathione synthesis, enhancing insulin signaling, and glucose tolerance, and modulating the activity of other cell-signaling molecules and transcription factors involved in energy production, and nutrition partitioning. Studies also suggest that alpha-lipoic acid may be helpful in treating glaucoma, and alcohol-related liver disease. May help:

  • Fight against free radicals
  • Enchance insulin sensitivity
  • Delay aging and improve brain functions
  • Maintain healthy cholesterol levels
  • Improve Cardiovascular fitness

ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID IN-DEPTH

Alpha Lipoic Acid is a fast-absorbing sulfurous fatty acid that is made by the body and is found in every cell. ALA\'s primary function in the human body is serving as a co-factor for several important mitochondrial enzymes.

ALA also exerts a powerful antioxidant activity int he human body, it can can directly scavenge physiologically relevant Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species. It is both water- and fat-soluble, and thus can penetrate tissues composed mainly of fat, such as the nervous system, as well as those made mainly of water, such as the heart, to protect them from free-radical damage. ALA also has been found to effectively regenerate other oxidized antioxidants, thus it helps the body use other antioxidants, such as vitamin E, and vitamin C, more efficiently. In addition researches suggest that ALA may increase glutathione synthesis by increasing the expression of the rate-limiting enzyme in glutathione synthesis. ALA supplementation shown to enhance glucose transport and utilization. Clinical studies suggest that oral administration of alpha-lipoic acid can improve insulin sensitivity.

IMPROVES INSULIN SENSITIVITY

Researchers at Buhl and City Hospital found that ALA supplementation at doses of 1,800 mg/day significantly improved insulin sensitivity after four weeks of treatment. ALA has been shown to increase glucose uptake by increase the number of GLUT-4 receptors on the outside of the cells. Thus supplementing with Alpha-lipoic acid can improve blood sugar controll, and its ability to kill free radicals may help reduce pain, burning, itching, tingling, and numbness in people who have nerve damage caused by diabetes.

ALA HAS BEEN FOUND TO IMPROVE AGE-ASSOCIATED COGNITIVE DECLINE

ALA may slow down the process of aging by improving blood flow in the brain, enhancing immune function, as well as positively affecting several other factors involved in aging. ALA supplementation can slow cognitive decline related to aging or other pathological conditions in humans, including Alzheimer’s disease. It also acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, which is relevant to many degenerative diseases.

ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID MAY IMPROVE CHOLESTEROL MEATBOLISM

ALA supplementation may improve cholesterol metabolism. Scientists at McGill University. found that alpha-lipoic acid supplementation for four weeks can increase HDL cholesterol levels.

ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID SUPPORTS CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

According to a clinical study conducted by researchers at the Boston University a combination of lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine may help lower blood pressure by increasing the width of arteries that had been constricted due to the build-up of plaque.
