CHROMIUM SUPPLEMENTS IN-DEPTH

Chromium is the active component of GTF (glucose tolerance factor) and participates in glucose metabolism by supporting the effects of insulin in facilitating the uptake of glucose into the cells. If chromium, and thus GTF (glucose tolerance factor) is not present, insulin’s actions are blocked. Chronic chromium defficiency lead to decreased insulin sensitivity, impaired glucose tolerance, and type 2 diabetes. In addition to its critical role in on carbohydrate metabolism, insulin also influences the metabolism of protein, and the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol by stimulating the enzymes involved in these processes.

Studies found that chromium supplementation may improve glucose tolerance and increase the number of insulin receptors on cells. By increasing the insulin sensitivity chromium supplementation enhances weight loss, decreases fat accumulation. A meta-analysis of 10 clinical studies concluded that chromium supplementation was associated with a significant greater reduction in body weight compared to placebo. According to clinical trials Chromium supplementation may lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in both diabetic and non-diabetic people, the typical changes were 10 percent reduction in total cholesterol levels.
